Encompassing a large portion of New Zealand’s North Island, this region stretches from the hot mud pools and
geysers of Rotorua and its surrounding lakes, right down to the country’s capital city of Wellington,
home of Te Papa museum. To the East is the Art-Deco city of Napier as well as the internationally
acclaimed wine growing areas of Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Martinborough.
The central plateau area features New Zealand’s largest lake, Taupo and the North Island ski
resorts on the slopes of the active volcano, Mt Ruapehu. The region is often known as the adventure
capital of New Zealand with a multitude of adventure sports for visitors to try, whether it be
whitewater rafting, skiing, bungy jumping, luge or jetboating.
